My mother always said a lady should never be without a clean white handkerchief or bus fare home tucked into her handbag
Yesterday I broke one of my rules and pumped gas for the very first time. I figured if I learned how Paul would be out a very important job but until he gets his licence back and can drive to the gas station it seems wise for me to know how.

A lady should always have a plan B. The auto club sounds like a great one.
Congratulations! I'm very proud of you and completely agree with the tire thing. :)
I've never had to change a tire. I've had 2 catastrophic flats, but both times I stood by the car looking helpless, and in less than 5 minutes some Big Strong Man would stop and change it for me. I am sure I could do it if I had to, but why should I if someone's ego gets a boost by doing it for me?
And your mother is absolutely right about the handkerchief.
Yep, the tire thing is a definite must-have knowledge, even just for the one time you might be out of mobile phone range and can't get the auto service out (we have intermittent mobile phone coverage here in Oz, what might work in one place won't get a signal 200 metres down the road).
RT: grey hair is an added bonus. Female AND old. *laugh*
Jayne: have to go a long way off my normal travel path to run out of phone coverage here.
I live in fear of having a flat tire by myself! I don't think I could change it, so I'm glad I have a cell phone. I have, however, learned to pump gas. And really resent it. Oh, how I miss the days when you could pull into the filling station and a cheerful uniformed man would run to your side, asking to pump your gas, wash your window, and check your oil. Some progressive ideas are definitely not a good thing.
Wow.. I'd be stranded if I didn't know how to 'fill up' with petrol (as we'd say here). Theoretically I can change a tyre as well, although when the wheels have last been put on with a machine at a tyre place, then I'm kind of sunk from a strength point of view. I've been lucky I've never had to change a wheel out on the road - knowing my luck after just saying that, I will.
